What is Profession Tax in Telangana

Profession Tax is a state levy. Telangana collects it under the Telangana Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act, 1987. In other words, every earning individual and every employer in the state falls within its net.

Who pays PT

Salaried employees pay PT if their monthly salary crosses 15,000 rupees. In addition, self employed professionals, traders, companies, LLPs, partnership firms and even directors pay an annual PT. Profession Tax slabs in Telangana for 2026

Salaried employee slab

If monthly salary is up to 15,000 rupees, PT is nil. Between 15,001 and 20,000 rupees, PT is 150 rupees per month. For salaries above 20,000 rupees, PT is 200 rupees per month. As a result, the maximum annual PT for any salaried person in Telangana is 2,500 rupees.

Business and professional slab

Self employed professionals, companies, LLPs and firms pay a flat 2,500 rupees per year. Moreover, directors of private limited companies pay the same 2,500 rupees annually, regardless of salary drawn. For contract workers and casual establishments, the rate varies by nature of trade.

PT due dates you cannot miss

Employer PT deducted from salaries must be paid by the 10th of the next month. For example, PT deducted in May must reach the government treasury by 10 June. In addition, the annual enrollment certificate PT of 2,500 rupees is payable by 30 June each financial year.

The Profession Tax notice family

Notice of enrollment demand

This notice asks why you have not obtained a PT enrollment certificate. In other words, the department believes you should be registered but are not. The reply is a fresh enrolment application along with back tax if applicable.

Notice of late payment

A late payment notice arrives when PT reached the treasury after the due date. Therefore, the reply must attach the challan, reconcile the dates and pay interest at 1.25 percent per month on the delay.

A short payment notice arrives when PT paid is less than what the salary register reveals. For example, the employer remitted 100 rupees per employee when the correct slab was 200 rupees. The reply is a payroll reconciliation plus a top up challan.

Notice of non filing of return

Employers must file a monthly PT return along with payment. A missed return invites a non filing notice. As a result, you must file the pending returns with the correct challan reference and a written explanation.

Scrutiny or audit notice
